Brand New Colony

Brand New Colony is a painting based on the speculated first group portrait painted in North America. The painting uses the portrait of Isaac Royall and his family, the Harvard Law School's most valuable work of art. American Colonial portrait painter Robert Feke made his reputation with this work.

Brand New Colony uses the image of the first American colonial portrait and makes a comment on the first families landing and colonising new planets in the future. It is also an image about the modern family. The space-helmets become metaphors for isolation. Yet the receivers on the sides of the helmets suggest a kind of communication. It is a painting about the modern family situation where each member is watching a different technological screen in the house. Communicating by phone. The clothed kitchen table a thing of the past, where families used to sit for dinner together.
